Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also called Percutaneous Collagen Induction Therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to rejuvenate the skin. It works by creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the dermis and epidermis, stimulating the skin’s natural healing process. This regeneration promotes healthier, more radiant skin.

The microneedling pen is equipped with sterile needles of varying sizes, numbers, and patterns, designed to target different skin depths. The tiny micro-injuries created by the needles trigger a natural immune response, stimulating inflammation and activating healthy surrounding cells. These cells work to repair and remodel the damaged area, resulting in smoother, brighter, and more refined skin.

Microneedling is a versatile treatment that addresses a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Acne Scarring: Helps improve the appearance of scars by stimulating collagen production to fill in uneven textures.
  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Effective for periorbital (around the eyes) and perioral (around the mouth) wrinkles, promoting smoother, firmer skin.
  • Skin Laxity: Enhances skin elasticity and firmness by boosting collagen and elastin production.
  • Post-Traumatic and Burn Scars: Reduces the visibility of scars from injuries or burns by encouraging skin regeneration.
  • Stretch Marks (Striae Distensae): Minimizes stretch marks by improving skin texture and tone.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Evens out skin tone and reduces areas of discolouration or dark spots.
  • Enlarged Pores: Reduces the appearance of large pores for smoother-looking skin.
  • Sun Damage: Improves skin texture and reverses the effects of sun damage, including mild sunspots.
  • Hair Loss (Alopecia): Stimulates hair follicles to promote hair growth when combined with other treatments like PRP.

Every individual’s skin is unique and responds to microneedling differently. However, as a general guideline, optimal and long-lasting results typically require 3-6 sessions spaced 2-6 weeks apart. Improvements such as smoother texture and enhanced skin tone can often be seen within a few weeks after the first treatment, while more significant changes develop over time with additional sessions.

Maintaining a proper skincare routine can further enhance and prolong the benefits, reducing the need for frequent treatments.

Microneedling is highly effective on its own, but its results can be significantly enhanced when combined with other treatments or active agents. These combinations amplify the benefits by targeting specific skin concerns. Some compatible agents include:

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Often called the “vampire facial,” PRP enhances the healing and rejuvenation process by delivering growth factors directly into the skin, promoting cell repair, and collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A deeply hydrating agent that plumps the skin, smooths fine lines and improves elasticity. It’s ideal for replenishing moisture and boosting the skin's glow.
  • Vitamin C: Known for its antioxidant properties, Vitamin C helps brighten the skin, reduce pigmentation, and protect against free radical damage, enhancing skin tone and texture.
  • Retinol/Peptides: Retinol supports cell turnover and collagen production, while peptides strengthen the skin barrier and improve elasticity, making them excellent choices for anti-ageing treatments.
  • Niacinamide: A calming and anti-inflammatory agent that helps reduce redness, improve skin texture, and strengthen the skin’s protective barrier.
  • Growth Factors: These mimic the body’s natural proteins, boosting cell regeneration and accelerating healing for smoother and firmer skin.
  • Kojic Acid: Effective for reducing hyperpigmentation and improving uneven skin tone when combined with microneedling.
  • Stem Cell Serums: Derived from plant or human sources, these serums stimulate cell repair and regeneration, enhancing skin vitality and texture.
  • Botulinum Toxin ("Botox"): Though not directly injected with microneedling, pairing microneedling with botulinum toxin in a treatment plan can target both skin texture and dynamic wrinkles for comprehensive rejuvenation.

The choice of additional agents depends on your specific skin goals and concerns. Dr Alya will tailor a personalized treatment plan to achieve the best results while ensuring safety and compatibility with your skin type.

To determine if microneedling is right for you, it’s important to be transparent about your:

  • Past medical history
  • Current and recent medications
  • Allergies
  • Recent health concerns, including any visits to your GP or hospital

When Microneedling May Not Be Suitable:

  • Pregnancy, IVF, and Breastfeeding: Treatment is not advised during these times.
  • Active Skin Conditions: Includes eczema, psoriasis, herpes, keloids, or acne in the treatment area.
  • Poorly Controlled Medical Conditions: Includes diabetes, autoimmune disorders, blood disorders, clotting disorders, cancer, or being immunocompromised. If any of these apply, consult your GP before proceeding.
  • Recent Sun Exposure or Tanning: It’s recommended to wait until the skin has recovered.

Temporary Conditions That May Delay Treatment:

  • Infections: Depending on severity, it may take 7-10 days to resolve.
  • Cold Sores: Requires 5 days of treatment before proceeding.
  • Medication: Anticoagulants (e.g., aspirin, warfarin) don’t need to be stopped as the risk of bleeding is minimal. Your skincare routine can usually continue until the day of treatment.

Planning for Recovery:
Avoid scheduling important events for at least 2 weeks after treatment, as some side effects may take longer to resolve.

Safety First:
If Dr. Alya determines that it is unsafe to proceed with the treatment, she will inform you of her decision, and the consultation will conclude without treatment.

It is vital to ensure that all information provided is read and understood before your microneedling treatment. Please find the Pre and Post-procedure treatment here.

  1. Pain: Minimal pain is expected as a numbing cream will be applied before treatment. If the pain is beyond expectation, contact Dr. Alya promptly to discuss your symptoms.
  2. Bruising: Bruises may vary in size but are usually self-limiting and resolve on their own.
  3. Bleeding: Minor bleeding is common during the procedure and typically stops quickly.
  4. Redness: Temporary redness (erythema) is normal and usually subsides within a short time. If it persists or feels warm/hot, contact Dr. Alya.
  5. Swelling: Swelling, including of nearby lymph nodes, is rare but typically resolves on its own.
  6. Infection: The risk is minimal due to Dr. Alya’s strict hygiene protocols and sterile techniques. However, if treated areas feel hot, red, or swollen, seek immediate review with Dr. Alya.
  7. Herpes (Cold Sores): If you have a history of cold sores, inform Dr. Alya during your consultation. Preventative measures may be advised. Should a flare-up occur, antiviral treatment may be necessary.

NB: Dr Alya always prioritises safety and has an emergency kit to handle unexpected side effects.
